I want to join the Art Students League because many of my classmates and friends have seen improvement in their artwork since studying here. Similarly, I want to build my skills as an artist and work on becoming more confident when I’m creating an art piece. This is challenging for me because I am scared of failure. I feel that the Art Students League will not only help me refine my skills to become a more observant artist but support me as I work to minimize this fear of failure.

I would like to be a comic book artist or an artist agent. I feel that these careers would give me a lot of freedom in the art world. Even as a comic book artist, though I need to follow a set of guidelines, I could be responsible for illustrating and arranging everything. As an Artist Agent, I would be able to make and sell my own work. In the art world, I would want to avoid someone owing me or owning how I create my art. I want to be independent and financially self-sufficient.
The artist that has influenced me the most is Jim Lee. I am mainly interested in his X-men art from the 90’s. I don’t have the original copy of his comics, but I’ve read them online. When I came upon Jim Lee’s work, I was already drawing anime, but his dynamic figures inspired me to build my skills and learn about human anatomy. There was a specific panel that I found particularly mesmerizing: a double page spread featuring the X-men after a battle. Jim Lee used the spread to illustrate different gestures and facial expressions complementing each character. I can appreciate Jim Lee’s more contemporary work, but his 90’s work will always be particularly inspirational.
