Lesson: Students were introduced to still life drawing using cups, bowls, cubes, and spheres. Lessons focused on observation, identifying shapes, lines, and shading. Students worked with oil pastel on construction paper.

Lesson: Students were tasked to paint self portraits using primary colors on bright colored paper. Kids focused on simple shapes to make their portraits. Thinking of colors to create contrast as well as using interesting shapes.

Lesson: Student’s played the exquisite corpse game, where each student contributes to one part of a drawing to collectively create a full character.

After-School Program

Lesson: This art project taught students how to make their own character who travels on trail. I taught them how to do the curly project the curly portraying is now a trail for a character/animal of their choice. One student really wanted to make the character from his game so he made a giant one with paper, super creative! Loved it!

Lesson: In the theme of the New Year’s Chinese Zodiac, The Snake, today’s lesson plan for both classes encouraged students to create their own snakes. The kindergartners created snakes using cut strips of construction paper. They designed the scales and the face of the snakes.

Lesson: Since the season didn’t receive much snow, students were asked to draw a day or night scene of their own snowy environment. They were shown a demo for each. The night scene uses black paper and white colored pencil so students were shown how to give the effect of the moon shining on the ground and trees. For the day scene, white paper and any colored pencils could be used so students were shown how to start with the sky and use the white of the paper for the snow. This activity doubles as an introduction to negative and positive space for older age groups.

Lesson: 4th and 5th grader students created dream-catchers. This will be a two day project. The first day focused on the netting of the dream catcher and how to cut out the dream catcher from the plate. For part two, I’ll be showing them how to design their dream catchers with feathers and hand made tassels from yarn. Students had the opportunity to color the border of the dream catcher with watercolor paint, markers, and colored pencils.

Lesson: Painting from life using acrylic. Brief introduction and 20 minute demonstration on how to approach painting from a model. For the rest of the workshop, Norberto rotated around the class helping each student with their individual paintings.

Lesson: For the next three months, I will teach my students how to paint using watercolor. We will learn various painting techniques, such as painting wet on wet, wet on dry, creating flat washes and gradient washes to create dynamic watercolors. After learning the techniques individually, we will combine and practice even further by doing a single image class painting together.
