In the Classroom
Seeds teaching artists know that children often lose some of the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the school year during the summer. Our classes, in partnership with community centers like PS37 and Bronx River Community Center, help reinforce the lessons students learn during the school year in fun and creative ways, while expanding artistic skill and confidence.

PS37 Summer Art Program
Teaching Artist: Andre Gibbs
Lesson Title: ‘Trapped Bookmarks.’
Lesson: A creative twist on bookmarks, kindergarten students at PS37 drew the head and shoulders of someone of their choice on a blank template and then cut them out and glued them onto a giant popsicle stick, making a bookmark. The bookmarks were made to give the illusion of a drawing stuck between the pages of a book, with the head and shoulders of their figure sticking out of the book. This lesson explored basic figure anatomy, expressive choices, and reinforced reading during the summer session.

Lesson Title: Hybrid Creatures
Lesson: Students exercised their creativity and animal knowledge to create imaginative creatures combining two animals into one. This lesson encouraged students to explore animals and insects that interest them and connects imaginative speculation within the sciences.
Bronx River Community Art Center
Teaching Artist: Tabitha Theogene
Lesson Title: Shape and Form
Lesson: Exploring familiar objects, places, and images, students at Bronx River Community Center looked closely at objects to discover the basic geometric shapes that make up these forms. Students exercised these skills, playing a game to identify objects and images using only three shapes. Students then created abstract images using only circles, squares, and triangles. This lesson reinforced basic geometry and volume.
