As a current Graphic Design student, I am just as surprised as many that I still don’t feel my creative endeavors fulfilled – at least not in the ways I used to. I learned from my past two years in the Communications Design program that while the industry is never-ending with creatives and opportunities, I am very much inclined towards illustration and storytelling. I have a love for both, but after investing time in the Arts Students League during my winter break, I found that my journey in Illustration isn’t over just yet. I found myself missing the studio environment I was in when I studied Illustration in the Art and Design High School. I had always dreamed of being an artist growing up and now I know I want to make it happen as soon as I can.
“I had always dreamed of being an artist growing up and now I know I want to make it happen as soon as I can.”
With that said, I’ve always thought about what I wanted to be in the future, and what career I wanted to follow. For a long time, I always responded to the question with an “I’m really not sure right now.” I researched and researched, and I watched interviews of artists I find to be influential to me to see how they got to where they finally figured it out. While I can’t give you a specific answer right now, at least I have found my passion for storytelling and evoking deep thought and emotion through my work. It’s what I find the most happiness doing. While I find this can also be done through writing or the musical arts, I have never strayed away from my focus on fine arts/illustration. It’s what I truly know and love.
Currently, I find myself to be influenced the most by films and the beauty of their storytelling through visuals and cinematography. I recently watched Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, and there are so many frames that have genuinely amazed me because of the thought put into color and composition. I found it so inspirational; as in many ways, elements like this can tell so much of the story before the main characters even start speaking.
