Growing up with a mother who is an artist gave me the opportunity to play. As long as they were safe for a five-year-old, I could experiment with different tools and mediums, even if I was just scribbling.

“I was blown away by how he could let loose and spill all his thoughts onto a canvas. That confidence is something that I wish to bring into my work.”
Jean Michel Basquiat, my greatest inspiration, plays. His free lines, brainstorming and journal-like art style has always mesmerized me. When I went to his exhibition near Chelsea this summer, I was blown away by how he could let loose and spill all his thoughts onto a canvas. That confidence is something that I wish to bring into my work.

At the Art Students League, I hope to build my own confidence when creating, whether that be in brush strokes, pencil marks or bold blocks of color, through both observational and abstract artwork. I also want to study here to learn skills that will help me connect art to my other interests: psychology and biology. I think that with more exposure to experienced artists’ techniques and building my self-trust in the creative process, I will have more freedom and clarity with regard to what my future career can turn into.
