Art has been with me for as long as I can remember. My parents were always incredibly supportive of my dreams and are always encouraging me to go forward and push myself. I have many ideas about the things I want to accomplish when I am older career-wise. My main goal, as of now, is to be a sculptor on stop-motion animation films. I love creating expressions and textures to bring characters and sets to life. I would also like to be an illustrator and developer of game designs and programs because the idea of taking simple code and turning it into an entire game seems so fascinating.
“When I achieve my dreams and goals for myself, I hope that all of my experiences from my past and the skills I learn from the League will come with me.”
I currently attend the High School of Art and Design and I am in the cartooning major, studying under Matt Lassen. Even though the school has helped me grow as an artist more than I could have imagined, I would like to attend the Art Students League to broaden my understanding of art. At my high school, there are some learning experiences that students are only eligible for when they choose a specific major. Because of this, I feel that I’m not accessing all of the knowledge that is available to me, and I want to branch out to learn new skills and techniques.
I would also like to attend to help expand my portfolio so I can submit them for college and pursue art in my career. I grew up with an art teacher who only taught her students how to draw realistically and believed that non-representational art was not as significant. When I finished middle school, I was introduced to tons of different artists with very stylized works that helped me get out of the idea that only realistic art is noteworthy. One of those artists was Q Hayashida. Hayashida is a comic book artist and writer. Her mix of realistic bodies and backgrounds compared to the simplified faces intrigues me. I find her linework and use of color and tone to be unique and easy to recognize. When developing my style years ago, I took inspiration from her and tried stylize my own work after hers. To this day there are still influences of her that can be seen through some of my art. Her influence will always be with me. When I achieve my dreams and goals for myself, I hope that all of my experiences from my past and the skills I learn from the League will come with me.
